Easily one of our favorite weeks of the year, in Minnesota and beyond.
International Compost Awareness Week is an annual event celebrated during the first full week of May. SET is dedicated to promoting composting and compost use as a means of diverting organic waste from landfills and improving soil health during this time period as well.
What is composting?
Composting is the process of breaking down organic materials, such as food scraps and yard waste, into a nutrient-rich soil amendment that can be used to improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and promote plant growth. Composting is a sustainable practice that not only reduces the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills but also helps to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil. Compost is a product that has been heat treated to specific temperatures which speed up the process of breakdown but more importantly eliminate weed seeds, invasive pests and pathogens to create a beneficial stabilized source of carbon for plant growth.
How can you contribute?
There are many ways to contribute to International Compost Awareness Week, such as supporting local composting initiatives and businesses. Many communities have composting programs or facilities that accept organic waste like discarded food or anything else once growing in your yard and turn it into compost. By supporting these initiatives and buying products for reuse, individuals can help to promote sustainable waste management practices and support local economies.
International Compost Awareness Week is an important event that highlights the benefits of composting and compost use. Help “SET-up” a more sustainable and healthier environment for yourself and future generations. Working hand in hand with local compost producers not only helps get rid of your yard waste and other organics, but also helps create a high quality compost that can be used to amend your existing soils, put in pots for indoor or outdoor potted plants, or build up a brand new garden bed for your herbs and veggies. SET has four locations that are more than happy to help with all your organic compost and soil blend needs.
